Travel Advisory/Tips :

Ladakh is a high altitude region and one needs to exercise due caution when visiting. Following travel advisory is offered:
  • Preferably consult with your GP before undertaking the trip.
  • People with existing medical conditions (cardiac/hypertension/diabetes and others) need to exercise greater caution.
  • Altitude gain should be gradual and there should be adequate time afforded for the body to get used to lower levels of oxygen.
  • Do not undertake vigorous physical activity in the first 48 hours in high altitude areas.
  • Any discomfort should be immediately reported to the nearest medical authority.
  • High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) symptoms (shortness of breath, weakness, nausea) may need treatment with oxygen.
  • In consultation with your GP, you may want to carry/consume pre-cautionary medicines including Acetazolamide (Diamox), Nifedipine (Procardia) for meeting any medical emergencies.
  • It is advised not to consume alcohol for the initial 2 days or your arrival in Leh.
  • Smokers should avoid smoking on the day of arrival.
  • Day time temperature in July is likely to be in mid-20 degrees C, while night temperature is likely to be around 10 degrees C. Choice of clothing to be appropriate as per likely temperature. Woolens and Wind Cheater are always a good idea in the hills.
  • Sun-Screens lotion is strongly recommended in the hills. Caps will also be good to have.
